Belmonte Takes a Step Towards Smart Tourism with the Launch of Its New Tourism Observatory

When we think of Belmonte, its impressive castle, rich medieval heritage, and one of the best-preserved historic ensembles in Castilla-La Mancha immediately come to mind. However, preserving cultural heritage and attracting visitors is no longer enough. Today’s tourist destinations need to understand what is happening in real time in order to make better-informed decisions.

With this vision in mind, the new Belmonte Tourism Observatory has been launched. Developed as part of the “Belmonte Medieval Paradise” Sustainable Tourism Destination Plan (PSTD), this data infrastructure is now fully operational.

More than just a technology platform, the Observatory represents a new way of managing the destination—one based on objective information, up-to-date indicators, and continuous analysis.

A Single Platform to Understand Destination Performance

The Tourism Observatory automatically integrates information from multiple public and private data sources, eliminating the need for manual data collection while providing a comprehensive view of the municipality’s tourism activity.

The integrated data sources include:

  • Official tourism statistics.
  • Booking and distribution platforms.
  • Web analytics tools.
  • Online reputation platforms.
  • Visitor mobility and behavioural indicators.
  • Data contributed by the local tourism ecosystem.

All this information is consolidated into a centralized data repository, allowing decision-makers to monitor key performance indicators in real time through intuitive and interactive dashboards.

Turning Data into Decisions

Technology alone does not transform a destination.

What truly creates value is the ability to transform thousands of scattered data points into actionable insights for decision-makers.

Thanks to the new Observatory, the Belmonte City Council now has access to strategic information that enables it to:

  • Monitor tourism demand trends.
  • Analyse accommodation occupancy levels.
  • Understand visitor mobility patterns.
  • Measure the impact of tourism promotion campaigns.
  • Identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Plan and scale municipal services according to actual visitor flows.

Having access to this information enables more accurate planning and supports a more efficient, sustainable, and results-driven management model.

Open Source Technology Serving Public Administration

The entire project has been built using Open Source technologies, ensuring a scalable, interoperable solution capable of incorporating new data sources as the destination’s needs evolve while minimizing long-term project costs.

The automation of data integration and updating processes significantly reduces manual work and ensures that reliable, up-to-date information is always available to municipal managers and decision-makers.

The result is a robust data infrastructure that transforms information into a strategic asset for public administration.

Another Step Towards Becoming a Smart Tourism Destination

Smart Tourism Destinations are no longer defined solely by digital connectivity or the adoption of new technologies.

Their true competitive advantage lies in their ability to use data to better understand the destination, anticipate future needs, and support evidence-based decision-making.

The Belmonte Tourism Observatory is a clear example of how technological innovation can translate into more efficient public management, an enhanced visitor experience, and a more sustainable tourism model.

Innovation Driving Local Development

This project has been developed within the framework of the “Belmonte Medieval Paradise” Sustainable Tourism Destination Plan (PSTD), funded by NextGenerationEU, and reflects the commitment of public administrations to the digital transformation and modernization of tourism management.

At our organization, we continue working to ensure that data is no longer just dispersed information, but becomes a genuine decision-making asset.

Because a smart destination is not the one that generates the most data.

It is the one that knows how to use it to build a better future.
